Attack on valuable cultural property

The Programmfabrik is deeply saddened by the vandalism in the museums of Mosul and the irretrievable destruction of cultural artefacts dating back thousands of years. "This is like someone destroying the Sphinx in Egypt. The loss is a catastrophe," the director of the Museum of the Ancient Near East in Berlin spoke out about this shocking news. As the past has shown, cultural assets and monuments are always targets of terror, protest and resistance - not least because it dilemmatically combines media impact and consternation. In an interview with Deutschlandradio Kultur, Friederike Fless, President of the German Archaeological Institute, pleaded for increased digitization of art assets. For example, 3D scans can already be used to create reproductions from fragments.
